APOE rs7412 is the second SNP that determines your APOE type. Combined with rs429358, it defines whether you carry the protective ε2 allele.

What This SNP Does

While rs429358 identifies the risk-increasing ε4, rs7412 identifies the protective ε2 allele. APOE ε2 is associated with lower Alzheimer's risk and better cholesterol clearance, though it slightly increases risk for type III hyperlipoproteinemia. The most common type, ε3, is defined by the absence of both ε2 and ε4 markers.

Genotype Meanings

Genotype	Status	What It Means
CC	Non-ε2	Does not carry ε2 at this position. Most common. (Check rs429358 for ε4 status.)
CT	One ε2 copy	Carries one protective ε2 allele. Associated with reduced Alzheimer's risk and better lipid clearance.
TT	Two ε2 copies	Homozygous ε2. Strongest protection against Alzheimer's. Small risk of type III hyperlipoproteinemia.

What You Can Do

ε2 carriers generally have favorable lipid profiles. Full APOE typing requires both this SNP and rs429358. Get a complete report to see your combined APOE genotype (ε2/ε2, ε2/ε3, ε3/ε3, ε3/ε4, or ε4/ε4).
